Great adaptation
10/10
I had always disliked modern-day adaptations of period dramas. My thoughts were that if the writer wanted to deviate so far from the original, then they should just simply create their own original story, and not need instead to ride on the coattails of a much greater author. Whilst that still holds more than a grain of truth for me, I think the way that it works in reality is that if you are a writer and you are approached to adapt a book to screen, modern-day adaptations are what you would angle for in order to get more creative input, and Sherlock demonstrates that if you do get a good writer then modern-day adaptations can be excellent in their own right. In fact, I have to confess that I prefer this Sherlock to any of the other film or TV versions I have seen. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman make a brilliant pairing. Cumberbatch plays a likeable and amusing "high-functioning sociopath", and Martin Freeman proves that you don't have to be a versatile actor to excel, he is pretty much the same Martin Freeman we know from The Office, The Hobbit and The Confession, and yet once again he is exceptional. For me the only weak link in the chain is Andrew Scott, who plays Moriarty. Moriaty is more like a mix between a melodramatic and petulant eight year old, and a children's pantomime villain, rather than somebody of the intellectual gravitas to stand toe to toe with Sherlock Holmes. All in all though, a great watch.

I'M SHOOK
10/10
This series is a rollercoaster of suddenly emotions, i cannot say enough times how much i liked this show, since the beginning in episode one i fall in love with both principal characters. Everything is so perfectly made, directed, produced, written and acted, everything just clicked with everyone's work, i'm about to do a deep searching of the screenwritters because i'm totally impressed by their abbilities in plot-twisting, and the development of our characters relationships, it's was so sweet to see two strangers become best friends and then becoming family in a very peculiar way, and the actors should be proud! I feel Sherlock's character went so well with the audience because people love good and BAD people, and he's both, he was tough and then they let us see him vulnerable, what it gave us the feeling of empathy. And its not a big surprise that this show got lots of fangirls, they got the perfect formula of a hard to not love character: confidence, intelligence, badass, mysterious, and more. Another thing you are going to love if you haven't watched the show, it's the villian and this is quite strange to think because most of the time when people connect with a villian is when the villian shows he actually has human emotions etc. but with Moriarty it's not like that, it's the way they show him, he is presented with all this rebel, and crazy vibe that you want more from him, Andrew made an amazing job at portraying him, he rocked the world in his scenes! And for the "END" of the show i want to say: It was made spectacular as always BUT i feel like there is still not conclusion for the characters, i understand if you want to make a open ending but this characters need a more conclusive episode, where they are out of solving cases, they grow in their life out of the cases. I really hope they agree to make a fifth season but if they don't it's okay because they would have their reasons... Nah do a fifth season!

Brilliant
10/10
Sherlock / Not Rated but could be PG-13 for crime, a little violence and adult themes. My mom read to me a lot and sealed my fate as a BIG reader. One of my early favorites from about 8 years old on was Sherlock Holmes. I helped ruin my eyesight by continuing to read after "lights out" under the covers via flashlight. Don't recommend it. This was due to my insatiable interest in the Arthur Conan Doyle character, Sherlock Holmes, and his companion Dr. Watson. Jules Verne is also partially to blame for "Mysterious Island" and my inability to stop reading when I was supposed to. I have forgiven him. Sherlock Holmes, in movies and TV, is one of the most filmed of all characters in fiction. And well he ought to be. A recent restoration of a silent era, first appearance of Sherlock in film was a wonderful addition to the Sherlock Holmes film collection. John Barrymore was the first SH and Roland Young was his sidekick. William Powell was in the 1922 version, who also played a brilliant detective in his own right as Nick Charles in The Thin Man in 1934 and all its sequels. Powell also played the lesser known Philo Vance crime solver during this era. Basil Rathbone created the best known and probably the most popular SH over many decades up to now. 2010 gives us a new look at the old character. There is no charge to see the new incarnation. PBS Mystery! Series has premiered its first 3 episodes of "Sherlock". The story has been updated to the 21st Century. British actor, Benedict Cumberbatch is the new SH with Martin Freeman as the new Dr. W. The first episode is a refresher of the SH legend with a new story title, "A Study in Pink" which is an updating of the original AC Doyle story, "A Study in Scarlet". ACD is co-credited as a writer but the update belongs to Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. MG also appears in a very important (un-credited) role in the series. Their writing and update is BRILLIANT. Combining the old elements that have made the series enduring and beloved, it adds all kinds of 21st century twists and turns. The story in the opener is a good old fashioned murder mystery with an evil serial killer doing bad. A bigger evil looms behind him. It's the manner they have chosen to tell the story which is original and BRILLIANT. The actors are dead on. No pun intended. There is just enough humor to take off the hard crime edge. Without giving away too much, I can tell you that it's all "Elementary". Find this show on your local PBS station and don't miss it. And, yes, for aficionados, Dr. Watson was recently in Afghanistan. It's rare to experience anything this good but when it's on free TV it's BRILLIANT. Rated 4.0 out of 4.0 reasons this review may not be BRILLIANT but it sure is one of personal thanks to the BBC folks and PBS. NOTE: another Robert Downey Jr./Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes 2009) film is also in the works. Since it's not due out till December 2011 this new TV version will hold over the die hard fans like me. And, maybe you. BRILLIANT.
